I love Laini Taylor. Seriously, guilty of some major fangirl moments. So I was waiting for this book with hot anticipation. After Daughter of Smoke and Bone, I was hooked.
Taylor takes us back to Karou and Akiva's haunting story in this sequel, which is, as the title suggests, filled with conflict. I saw one person mention on Twitter that it was more blood than starlight, and I'd have to agree. Still, the world is magnificent, the characters are sparkling, and it's a wonderful story to sink your teeth into.
Be warned, however: gone are the warm fuzzies from Smoke and Bone. Be prepared to be shocked in many ways, but I think you'll enjoy this elegant novel!
Whew. I did it! One hundred books this year!! I think I'll take a blog break now...see you in 2013!
What books do I need to read next year? Help me build my TBR list back up!

Cover Reveal: The Key Inheritance
Cover reveal: the sequel to The Burning of Isobel Key will be available in January 2013!
About the Book:
Ten years after the trip to Scotland that changed her life, Lou is back in the misty, magical country. This time, however, she’s not on vacation: Lou is there to settle some distasteful and depressing family business. When Brian, her old Highland fling, turns up, Lou is forced to wrestle with a past that she thought was dead and buried. As tension between the former lovers mounts, something wicked is stirring in Scotland. Lou must use all her strength to handle the increasingly desperate situation, but will she be strong enough to battle both a vengeful ghost and her heart?
The Key Inheritance is a novella that takes place a decade after the events of The Burning of Isobel Key. This contemporary story crosses into the supernatural as Lou discovers evidence of a long-dead spirit who refuses to rest in peace. Lou may have thought that she was finished with the witch Isobel Key, but her inheritance is more than the young woman can handle alone.

100 Books in 2012: books 98 and 99 THIS DARK ENDEAVOR and SUCH WICKED INTENT
A good friend met Kenneth Oppel recently, and snagged signed copies of the first two books in the Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein series, and last week, I hunkered down on the couch with these dark, enticing tales.
In This Dark Endeavor, Oppel paints a believable portrait of young Victor; the youngest of a pair of twins, he both worships and envies his older brother. But when his brother falls ill, Victor is willing to put his faith in the outlawed art of alchemy if it means the chance to save him. Becoming a hero doesn't hurt, either, and Victor is pulled into dark acts by his own ego and his love for his twin, Konrad. With a dash of romance, a hearty dose of danger, and an action-packed plot, it's no wonder this novel has been optioned for a motion picture!
In Such Wicked Intent, Victor's ego takes him away from science and into the dark occult world of his famous ancestor, the man who compiled the mysterious dark library, claimed to have mastered death, and disappeared one day, leaving his family behind without a glance. In his quest to save Konrad and at the same time to outshine him, Victor unwittingly awakens a powerful malicious spirit. Can Victor and his friends set aside their differences to save the Frankenstein family, or will everything crumble in the wake of Victor's ambitions?
Now I just need to go read Shelly's ACTUAL masterpiece that inspired this exciting, dark YA series.

100 Books in 2012: Book 97 THE NIGHT CIRCUS
Wow.
Just, wow.
This was a book that I wanted to live in for a long time after finishing (maybe that's why it's taken me months to get around to this review). Erin Morgenstern has crafted an elegant, magical story of deception, power, and, most of all, love.
The characters are flawed and vibrant, and I'd love to slip into most of their skins and live a day in this tale, but the one I love most is Bailey. Sweet, normal, vital Bailey. He's the character I would most like to be; the boy who gets to live a dream grander than he'd ever hoped.
If you haven't stumbled into this enchanting novel yet, I just saw it in paperback at the bookstore this weekend: snag it soon and hang a do not disturb sign on your door until you are done.

100 Books in 2012: Book 96 THE SELKIE SPELL
Writer Sophie Moss has crafted a truly modern fairy tale that is impossible to put down. I tumbled into The Selkie Spell this weekend, and I am thrilled to note that it's only the first in a trilogy. I was only disappointed when I realized that this is currently just available as an ebook: I wanted to buy paperbacks for my pals for the holidays!
Tara is running from a dark, abusive past, and when she reaches Seal Island, an out of the way chunk of land in Ireland, she's sure she's found a good place to hide. But she didn't take into consideration Dom, the handsome pub owner, or her own mysterious connection to the island.
The romance that builds between Tara and Dom is steamy and soft, and the secrets that threaten to topple Tara are painful to unravel. I couldn't stop reading this until I reached the end of the tale, and I have to say that my favorite part is the way Moss deftly weaves a magical Irish legend into the fabric of this very real story. Brava!
