More Books in 2011

Due to a snow day, an early release day, and a lazy weekend, I've finished two more books this week.

"Clockwork Angel" by Cassandra Clare is a great YA fantasy novel that walks the tightrope between being a "boys' book" and a "girls' book", and does a wonderful job. There is action, gore, and betrayal layered with romance and a spunky female protagonist. One of my students let me borrow this, and I loved it.

I also decided to see what all the fuss was about and reserved a copy of "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett. I LOVED this multi-voiced historical novel focusing on the relationships between women and race in Mississippi in the 1960s. As usually happens, I understand why this has been a favorite book club books in the past year.

In other news, the launch party for the local magazine is tonight, and I am...nervous. It's a heady thing, being able to rub elbows with other folks published in the same magazine as me, and I'm nervous about reading my poem. This is a spec fiction crowd, and I don't know how well received my poem will be, but I'm really excited for this opportunity.

It's been a crazy day. I hope the evening runs more smoothly!

  1. If you're looking for other books to read while it snows in the South, I loved "The Secret Life of Bees" by Susan Monk Kidd and "The Red Tent" by Anita Diamant. Both are historical fiction with some good strong female leads.

  2. Those are two of my favorite books! I keep wishing that one day I will even come close to writing like Kidd and Diamant. Maybe it's time for a re-read!
