100 Books in 2012: Book 56 "The Alchemyst"

It feels like this book has been on my "to be read" pile forever, but I never got around to picking it up from the library until now.  Michael Scott crafts a world where myth and magic collide with reality in a fun and fast-paced way.

Josh and Sophie, teenaged twins working in California for the summer, witness a bizarre attack when they are at work.  They are sucked into a world with immortal alchemy legends like John Dee and Nicholas Flammel, and the twins quickly go from witnesses to participants in an age old battle for the domination of the planet.  Ancient forces are at work: the entities that mortals know as the old gods are stirring, and they want to take the earth back from the humans.  Josh and Sophie must decide what role they are willing to play in the coming battle while at the same time struggling to accept the reality that their lives will never be normal again.  When only Sophie's innate magical abilities are awakened, Josh is forced to choose between his ego and the fate of his family...and the world.

Fans of the Harry Potter and Percy Jackson series will enjoy this book.

Alchemy has popping up a lot in fiction lately.  What are some of your favorite novels (both YA and adult) that deal with the ancient magical science?
