I never really considered myself a "literary" writer. I've always thought that my work will, of course, be considered popular fiction once I'm published.
But. I am struggling with angst about my upcoming NaNo project. I am really excited about it, but the more I outline and plan, the more I realize this work will be verging on trashy historical sensationalism. Which shouldn't bother me, right?
Wrong. I find myself doubting the validity of the project just because it seems to fit the more popular markets.
I know that this is foolish. It's the story I want to write, and it's the story I'm going to write, and I just have to get over my inner disparaging of my description of the protagonist as "a buxom beauty who makes Lady Macbeth look docile."
And who knows what the work will become as the words spill onto the page? I know from long experience that I never write exactly the book I think I'm going to write.
Would it be so bad to write something flashy, trashy, and popular?
So many writers are TRYING to write flashy, trashy and popular! ;)
ReplyDeleteNot only is there nothing wrong with it, it is a great way to get started. You're right. It may well end up entirely different, by the time you're finished with it!
(That's often how I rationalize not planning/outlining. Whatever I write always ends up quite different than what I began with, in my head!)
