100 Books in 2012: Book 21 "Cinder"

As you probably know, I adore re-tellings of fairy tales (it's a genre I've even dabbled in, myself). So when the library emailed me to let me know that a copy of Marissa Meyer's debut novel was waiting for me, I dropped everything to read it.

Cinder is a cyborg, part-human and part-machine, living in New Beijing a hundred or so years after the fourth World War. Her guardian hates her, making Cinder work as a mechanic to support the family, but Cinder doesn't mind the work. She's a gifted mechanic and constantly has clients: including a surprise visit from Prince Kai, the son of the emperor. But the romance is thwarted when the emperor falls victim to a deadly plague, and Prince Kai is bullied into a marital alliance with Lunar, the nation that inhabits the moon.

With all the pieces of the original Cinderella tale re-imagined in a unique, futuristic society, it's no wonder this book has been so well received. I'm eagerly awaiting the release of the second book in the series next year. Fairy tale fans and sci-fi folks will love this novel for different reasons, but I adored the artful cast of characters.

Oh, and don't forget to spring forward! What are you reading this weekend?

  1. This DOES sound like a good book! Although if it ever came to pass, I would wonder who survived the Third and Fourth World Wars and how they came to be!

    1. Hmmm...fair point. It's a mark of how good the book is that I didn't even think to ask that question!

  2. I just started Laini Taylor's Daughter of Smoke and Bone. It is gorgeously written and I was hooked after the first paragraph. I find your blog through the plot workshop listserv and am your new blog follower :0)
